The Many Layers of Sharing

People have always loved to share what they watch on TV — it’s been the water cooler conversation for decades. At Miso, we believe that ‘checking-in’, or sharing, is the starting point for a conversation. The next evolution may be “what are you planning to watch next?” or “what do you think about what you just watched?” We are just getting started. So what does this mean in regards to the recent survey results from SideReel, which reveal that only 10% of their users want to share what they watch and only 25% want to see their friends watching habits? I think we need to dig deeper. To share or not to…

Boxee users needed to test new Miso app

Miso is looking for beta testers to try out a new mobile app that integrates with Boxee while you watch TV. Testers must watch TV through Boxee. Testers will gain access to this app before it’s publicly released, but as it’s a beta there’s always a chance it’s a little buggy. We are looking for testers who are willing to report possible bugs as well as provide comments and suggestions that we will use to fine-tune the features. Sound fun? Sign up now before space fills up! Those who have been accepted as beta testers will receive an email in a few weeks. Thanks, The Miso Team

Miso Engineering Blog!

Introducing The Miso Engineering Blog! In this blog, we write about exciting things going on with Miso, introducing partnerships, and new releases. With the recent launch of our API, we’re also introducing an engineering blog where we’ll share interesting things about the technical implementation of Miso. If you’re interested in learning how Miso works under the hood, check it out! Our first post is about monitoring Varnish, a server which makes Miso faster by remembering commonly accessed images and feeds.

Easy Monitoring of Varnish with Munin

If you’re looking for a reverse proxy server, Varnish is an excellent choice. It’s fast, and it’s used by Facebook and Twitter, as well as plenty of others. For most sites, it can be used effectively pretty much out of the box with minimal tuning. Like many decently-sized Rails apps, we leverage a lot of open source code. Dozens of gems and plugins, a variety of cloud services, Varnish and Nginx for caching and load balancing, and various persistence solutions. The point is, as our app usage has grown over the last year, we’ve had our share of stressful, on-the-fly debugging while our app was down. That’s not the best…

Engineering at Miso

Recently, the Miso team came to the conclusion that alongside our existing Miso blog, there was an opportunity to discuss an entirely different aspect of what we do. While the official blog covers exciting new features and news, the posts here will have a much more technical and entrepreneurial focus, highlighting the engineering and creative efforts at Miso. As my first post, I wanted to take a stab at a breadth-first overview of the state of things from an engineering perspective at Miso as we begin the new year. Our Development Team We have been very fortunate to put together a great team here and introducing each of us is…

An Exciting Start to 2011

We’re thrilled to announce some amazing developments here at Miso. Google and Hearst Invest in Miso.  We are excited to announce that right at the end of 2010, we closed our Series A round, raising an additional $1.5M. The round was led by Google Ventures with Hearst Interactive Media also participating.  With this money, we plan to hire more engineers which will allow us to continue to innovate, build Miso, and improve our second screen platform.  While the last year was focused on building a ‘check-in’ foundation, in 2011, we will create more ways for people to engage around the second screen, secure more partnerships, and lead innovation around the intersection of social, TV,…
